Signing Scope and Limits

Signing-enabled outputs carry C2PA Content Credentials on the final media. Signature validity, certificate trust, and trusted timestamp availability are separate checks, reported by compatible verification tools.

What is C2PA?

C2PA is an open technical standard for recording claims about the source and history of digital content. Compatible tools can check signed assertions and their binding to the media. Verification does not establish that those assertions are complete or that a depicted event is true.

Signed Provenance Records

Content Credentials can record model and job identifiers, generation actions, and relationships to edited source media. They bind those assertions to the signed file; they do not prove that a depicted event actually happened.

Separate Rights Review

Cryptographic verification can reveal alterations to signed content. It does not establish copyright ownership, a person's consent, or legal clearance. Those require separate records and review.

Platform Compatibility

Re-encoding and publishing platforms can remove provenance metadata. Keep the original signed file and verify the retrieved public file after distribution. Do not assume every channel preserves Content Credentials.

Verification

Download the original signed output and inspect it with a compatible C2PA verifier. Check signature validity, certificate trust and timestamp results separately. A valid signature is not the same as a publicly trusted signing identity or a grant of content rights.
